2 Ukulele and Dance

Week 2 Ukulele and Dance is a review of Week 1.  It is imperative that students know how to hold their instruments and strum without plunking for them to proceed to Week 3.

  1. Before students hold their ukuleles, demonstrate the way to hold a ukulele and talk about the parts of their instrument. Be sure to tell the students that their instruments are tuned and they should not touch the keys.  (Some of our campuses place a sock over the head of the ukulele to remind our little ones not to touch the keys.)Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 2.18.58 PM
  2. Ask each child to hold their ukulele.
    “Left hand holds the ukulele neck.”
    “Right hand strums.”
    “Sit up straight and hold the ukulele against your stomach!”
  3. “A hush fell over the ukuleles” is what we usually say when students begin randomly strumming.
    Demonstrate plunking. This is where the finger catches each string.
    Now, demonstrate proper strumming.
  4. Ask students to strum with you as you count.

  5. “Does anyone recognize that song? Let’s try it again, all together!” You can hum “Are you sleeping, are you sleeping, brother John, brother John. Morning bells are ringing. Morning Bells are ringing. Ding dong ding. Ding dong ding.”
  6. Repeat steps 6 and 7 several times.
  7. Ask students to return their ukuleles to the chairs and come back to the circle quickly and quietly.

Dance

Clapping Exercise

  1. Clap a simple pattern.
  2. Ask students to repeat the pattern.
  3. Clap a more complicated pattern.
  4. Clap and ask students to repeat several times.
  5. Ask students to remain in the circle but turn their backs to one another.
  6. Start out quietly clapping a pattern to the student on your right.
  7. Ask each student to repeat the pattern as they go around the circle.
  8. See what the pattern sounds like when it gets back to you.
